Statement of the WJCIC Regarding the Greater Wisconsin Committee’s TV Ad Referencing Child Sexual Assault Cases
By THOMAS SOLBERG

The Wisconsin Judicial Campaign Integrity Committee (WJCIC) has reviewed a third-party television advertisement that criticizes Judge Michael Gableman’s record as a prosecutor and judge in respect to his handling of cases involving the sexual assault of children. The committee believes the ad is problematic and misleading to voters for a number of reasons, including the reality that a 30-second TV ad simply cannot provide an appropriate and meaningful context within which data of the kind presented here can be evaluated by voters.

The Wisconsin Judicial Campaign Integrity Committee (WJCIC) welcomes two positive developments today in the campaign for the Wisconsin Supreme Court. Judges can have no constituents
By THOMAS J. BASTING

The drama in most elections is over who will be elected. But in the 2008 Wisconsin Supreme Court election, the uncertainty is over how someone will be elected.

In the past, judicial elections were quiet affairs with total expenditures far below $1 million. But both political rhetoric and campaign spending reached unprecedented levels during the 2007 Wisconsin Supreme Court election; with electioneering practices more typical of partisan legislative races and total spending approaching $6 million.

Justice for Sale
How special-interest money threatens the integrity of our courts.
BY SANDRA DAY O'CONNOR
Thursday, November 15, 2007

Voters generally don't express much interest in the election of judges. This year, as in years past, voter turnout in elections for judges was very low. But judicial elections, which occur in some form in 39 states, are receiving growing attention from those who seek to influence them. Letter to Honorable Michael J. Gableman

The Wisconsin Judicial Campaign Integrity Committee has sent a responce to Judge Gableman

I am dismayed by the response issued by your campaign to the Wisconsin Judicial Campaign Integrity Committee's (WJCIC) December 18th statement. First, it mischaracterizes the committee's position by claiming the committee "said Louis Butler's record as a Supreme Court Justice was fair discussion in the race for the state's highest court." While prior court rulings are clearly within bounds for discussion, the committee did not say anything about Louis Butler's record and certainly did not determine that the characterizations of that record in the campaign materials produced by your campaign and reviewed by the committee were fair.
